{"id":989,"date":"2013-07-08T19:55:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-09T00:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.richarsenault.com\/content\/?p=989"},"modified":"2013-07-08T19:55:06","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T00:55:06","slug":"attempting-all-grain-a-blueberry-wheat-ale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.richarsenault.com\/content\/2013\/07\/attempting-all-grain-a-blueberry-wheat-ale\/","title":{"rendered":"Attempting All Grain &#8211; A Blueberry Wheat Ale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April I moved from extract brewing to all grain, and the beer I made was this Blueberry Wheat Ale. \u00a0It&#8217;s based on Northern Brewer&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbrewer.com\/shop\/american-wheat-beer-all-grain-kit.html\" target=\"_blank\">American Wheat Beer kit<\/a><\/strong>, with 2 ounces of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbrewer.com\/shop\/blueberry-natural-extract.html\" target=\"_blank\">Blueberry Extract<\/a><\/strong> added.<\/p>\n<p>But I goofed.<\/p>\n<p>Being my first attempt at all grain I don&#8217;t mind that it didn&#8217;t come out as planned, as long as I learn from it. \u00a0Here are my mistakes, in case they help you as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Due to a brew pot which was too small, I only boiled 4 gallons of wort. \u00a0I then topped it off with water to get to 5 gallons (being used to doing this from extract brewing) and then after that I took the specific gravity and found it too high. \u00a0I immediately realized how I had just diluted the wort. \u00a0I recently ordered this\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003EW8HWY\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003EW8HWY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=richaarsen-20\" target=\"_blank\">8 Gal Brewing Kettle<\/a><\/strong> for the next brew day, which should be in another couple weeks.<\/li>\n<li>I sparged too quickly. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember how long it took, but between letting it run too fast and the issue above I ended up with just a\u00a01.25% ABV when bottled. \u00a0I&#8217;m going to slow that down and pull 5.5-6 gallons in around 40-60 minutes for the next batch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The flavor of the beer is also a little off. \u00a0It&#8217;s drinkable, but weak. \u00a0I&#8217;m definitely looking forward to making this beer again to see how it should really taste, but I think the next one will be a Pumpkin Ale. \u00a0The pumpkin beer season is coming and I want that one to be ready!<\/p>\n<p>So here we have my weekly photo &#8211; the Blueberry Wheat Ale. \u00a0Some frozen blueberries were added to the glass before the pour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weekly Photo &#8211;\u00a0Blueberry Wheat Ale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.richarsenault.com\/Food\/Beer-and-Brewing\/28161418_MQ4w3f#!i=2622976958&amp;k=xW6djRc&amp;lb=1&amp;s=A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/portfolio.richarsenault.com\/Food\/Beer-and-Brewing\/i-xW6djRc\/0\/O\/Blueberry-Wheat.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.richarsenault.com\/content\/2013\/07\/attempting-all-grain-a-blueberry-wheat-ale\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.richarsenault.com\/content\/wp-content\/plugins\/thumbnail-for-excerpts\/tfe_no_thumb.png\" class=\"alignleft wp-post-image tfe\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><\/a><p>In April I moved from extract brewing to all grain, and the beer I made was this Blueberry Wheat Ale. \u00a0It&#8217;s based on Northern Brewer&#8217;s American Wheat Beer kit, with 2 ounces of Blueberry Extract added.
